The Old Luggers online-Academy
of Marine Painting:
Useful Links & Book List
There is more detailed information about old shipping in these half dozen books than could be exploited in a lifetime of painting. Regrettably they're not being offered for sale on this site but it's very well worth searching collectors' booksellers and markets for them. There is incidentally 'Basic Perspective Drawing' by John Montague currently in print as I understand and 'The Last of the Windjammers' I and II definitely in print (as at 10/6/00).
'The Last of the Windjammers', Volumes I and II by Basil Lubbock published by Brown,Son & Ferguson.
'The Down Easters' one volume also by Basil Lubbock.
'Sailing Ship Rigs and Rigging' by Harold A. Underhill, also published by Brown, Son & Ferguson.
'Shipping Wonders of the World', Volumes I and II edited by Clarence Winchester, The Fleetway House, London. This is a massive 1930's partwork with nearly 2000 pages of specialist illustrated material dealing with almost everything everywhere up to the launch of the Queen Mary.
Small volumes in the 'How to Draw' series by The Studio; London and New York - 'How to Draw Sail & Sea' - Michal Leszczynski, 'How to Draw Ships' -Peter F. Anson. This is quality material that's hard to find among today's floppyback A4's.
And, mentioned elsewhere, 'Background to Perspective' by William Coombes, published by Adam & Charles Black, London.
The multi hundreds of general art course material books and videos are probably as well known to you as to me - many of these feature boats and water, it's always been a massive lure. The maritime and other museums noted in the links section also put out a wealth of images, some on the Net and many in their own book and art card publications.
